SmartPos – Sensors and AI Support for Efficient Load Transfers in Manufacturing Technology

Subproject: AI-Supported Localization and Fine Positioning of Load-Handling and Load-Transfer Devices in Intralogistics as a Complement to Existing Robotic Systems

Project Description

The “SmartPos” project is developing an innovative solution for the precise fine positioning of automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and mobile robots. Current systems face numerous challenges in this regard: Mechanical alignment systems are costly, commissioning takes a long time, and floor surface requirements are stringent. Everyone is familiar with the difficulties of parking a car—but with mobile robots, a load must also be transferred after parking, which requires a very high degree of precision. These weaknesses lead to inefficiencies and a high susceptibility to malfunctions in intralogistics material transfer.

SmartPos relies on sensors and artificial intelligence (AI) to detect the exact position of the load carrier relative to the station and to compensate for errors caused by tolerances and uneven floors. The system enables station detection without the need for artificial markers and allows for autonomous adaptation to various environmental conditions.

SmartPos is designed to minimize structural and spatial requirements, which simplifies integration into existing systems and reduces the costs of automating material flow processes. The result is a hardware component with accompanying configuration software, enabling easy integration. This not only increases the efficiency of material transfer but also makes the technology more accessible to small and medium-sized enterprises. SmartPos aims to increase the level of automation in logistics and create new opportunities for integrating autonomous systems into industrial processes.
