WLOKI – Localization of Mobile Devices Using WLAN RSSI Methods

Brief Description

The goal of this project is to determine the position of mobile devices (personal digital assistants and smartphones) and the position and orientation of mobile robots within buildings. In addition to other indoor positioning technologies and methods—such as signal transit time measurement, which requires additional hardware investments—measuring the signal strength of multiple access points is a viable approach. By analyzing the attenuation of signal strength as the distance from the transmitter increases, the project seeks to obtain information about the device’s position and orientation. There are various approaches and mathematical and statistical methods, which the authors have adapted or developed anew. To remain compatible with existing Wi-Fi installations, the Wi-Fi hardware and system software used were not modified. For the methods under investigation, measurement series were conducted in different measurement environments and compared with one another. In the following, the methods under investigation are first presented, followed by a presentation of the results of the measurement experiments.
