Subproject: Development of Operational, Cross-Platform Functional Modularization for Rescue Robotics
Project Description
In the future, rescue robots and related technologies (e.g., wireless communication and data processing) will be deployed as integrated operational tools to gather relevant information from a safe distance. This information will be consolidated into situational reports that serve as the basis for targeted actions by emergency responders. Robotic support not only minimizes risks to emergency responders in hostile environments but also enables actions to be initiated more quickly without endangering them.
The German Rescue Robotics Center (DRZ) e.V. was founded as part of the BMBF-funded A-DRZ project (October 1, 2018, to September 30, 2022). Acting as a catalyst, the DRZ strives to bring together users, researchers, and innovative companies, to pool expertise within a network, and thereby to promote the development of innovative robotics and related technologies and to transfer and integrate them into practice in a way that meets actual needs.
The goal of the project is to establish the German Rescue Robotics Center on a sustainable basis. The project brings together key players from academia, industry, and end users, and pools existing expertise in rescue robotics and the deployment of robots in the field of civil security. In this context, DRZ e.V. serves as the point of contact and knowledge hub for inquiries from third parties regarding rescue robotics and makes its infrastructure available in the Living Lab for testing and real-world validation of rescue robotics systems and technologies.
With the aim of advancing innovative system solutions for emergency responders to alleviate risky and health-hazardous tasks and minimize risks to them, the project involves the development and establishment of externally accessible platforms for evaluating the performance of competing system solutions.
As in the previous A-DRZ project, Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts is participating as a partner through its Department of Mechanical Engineering and the IDiAL. The research work in the follow-up project, E-DRZ, focuses on the further development of the mobile ground robot platforms from A-DRZ, the modularization concept, and new developments in the field of multi-robot cooperation. The collaboration involves ground robots and drones.
