Z-Node: Development of a Low-Cost, Energy- and Communication-Self-Sufficient Multisensor (Z-Node) for a Holistic, IT-Based Waste Management System

About the Project

As part of the Z-Node project, in collaboration with industry partner Zolitron Technology GmbH from Bochum, a smart sensor system is being developed to retrofit recycling containers for waste glass, along with an associated cloud infrastructure that allows waste management companies to check the fill levels of their containers. This enables waste management companies to empty the containers as needed and to plan the routes of their collection vehicles in a way that is both economically and environmentally optimal. The system architecture is shown in the figure.

Die wesentlichen Innovationen im Projekt Z-Node sind:

  • Maintenance-free operation of the sensors for up to 10 years (no batteries required thanks to micro energy harvesting and an energy-efficient design)
  • Easy retrofitting of existing containers by attaching the sensor and smartphone-based registration (vibration measurement instead of weighing or optical ultrasound measurement; distributed data analysis on the sensor and in the cloud based on machine learning methods)
  • Efficient support for development using data-driven machine learning approaches (use of data loggers as well as manual recording of fill levels during the learning phase; transmission and storage of extensive raw data in the cloud; easily modifiable
  • Algorithms in the cloud)
  • The ability to update the sensor network to support an agile development approach with iterative improvement cycles (use of NB-IoT wireless technology)
